Every company running SAP ECC faces the same question: where to go next, and when. The answer is not the same for everyone, and the market is not only about public cloud. Here is a practical way to look at the options.
The deadline that frames the decision
SAP's mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC 6.0 (enhancement packages 6 to 8) ends on 31 December 2027. Optional extended maintenance is available until the end of 2030, at additional cost. Under RISE with SAP, a transition option can stretch support to 2033, but only for selected customers that meet specific conditions, so it is not a general extension. A move to S/4HANA takes time to plan and deliver, so for most companies the decision belongs on the agenda now, even if the go-live is years away.
The main options
- SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition (typically through GROW with SAP). A standardised, SAP-managed SaaS ERP with regular upgrades. Fastest to adopt, and best suited to companies that can work with standard processes.
- SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (typically through RISE with SAP). More flexibility and room for specific requirements, with infrastructure and operations managed in the cloud.
- SAP S/4HANA on-premise. Full control over the system, the infrastructure and the upgrade schedule, with the responsibility for running it.
- Staying on ECC for now. A valid short-term choice if you use the time well: cleaning up custom code, modernising integrations and preparing data.
Five questions that decide the right path
- How standard are your processes? If your differentiation lies in products and service rather than in ERP processes, public cloud becomes very attractive.
- How much custom code do you rely on? Heavy, business-critical customisation points to private cloud or on-premise, at least as a first step.
- What does your IT team want to run? Public cloud removes most of the operational work. On-premise keeps it in-house.
- How fast do you need to move? Standard-first public cloud projects can go live much faster than full transformations.
- How complex is your integration landscape? Many interfaces call for an integration strategy, usually on SAP BTP, whatever the deployment model.
Start with facts, not with a product
The best decisions start from an honest picture of your current landscape: processes, custom code, interfaces and data. A short, structured readiness assessment gives you that picture, and a clear recommendation, before you commit budget to a full programme.
